For oil tankers and ships working in oil fields, spark arresters must be installed on the exhaust pipes of main engines, auxiliary engines, boilers, etc. For diesel engines, in order to reduce equipment and reduce the back pressure of the exhaust system, the general muffler and spark arrester are combined into one device, that is, a spark extinguishing muffler.
Marine spark extinguishing mufflers can be roughly divided into two types: dry and wet:
Dry: By changing the process of the exhaust gas flow, the air flow flows slowly and rotates, so that the sparks in the gas are fully burned, and the unburned ash particles collide with the wall or mesh plate to achieve the purpose of extinguishing the sparks. The ash particles are concentrated and discharged to the ash box or discharged into the atmosphere with the air flow;
Wet: After the air flow enters the muffler, it rotates and flows slowly, and after fully contacting with the water curtain, the purpose of extinguishing the sparks is achieved.
After extinguishing, the dirty ash water flows to the bottom of the cabin. Its characteristics are short process, compact structure, good fire extinguishing effect, and low resistance. The disadvantage is that if fresh water is used, the consumption of fresh water is not economical; if sea water is used, the muffler is severely corroded and has a short life.
The spark extinguishing muffler body should have a manhole or hand hole for easy inspection and cleaning. The internal structure should be easy to build and clean, and equipped with compressed air blowing facilities. The wet spark extinguishing muffler must have a drain pipe and be easy to repair. If there is an ash collecting box (pipe), it should have a door cover that is easy to open and close.
